Participants are women between the ages of 45-75 years with a valid AZV card and whom are not undergoing any medical treatment for their breasts at the moment. The screening program is an ongoing preventative program in which we aim to detect irregularities that could indicate early stages of breast cancer. Participation is possible every 2 years. It is good to know that the breast screening program has no additional costs for the participants.

Wear a two piece outfit on your appointment date. Please be on time. Register at our reception desk. When you are asked to enter the changing room please take your blouse and bra off and enter the mammogram room. The technicians will instruct and help you position the breasts on the mammogram machine to take pictures. While taking x-ray pictures, the machine will lightly compress the breast and quickly release it. This only takes few seconds each time. After all pictures ( 4 or 6 in total) are taken you can return to the changing room to clothe yourself and you are ready to leave. Results will be sent to your GP automatically within 2-3 weeks.

Age is one of the participation conditions we maintain at BOB Aruba. To be able to participate you must be between the ages of 45 years and 75 years. Breast exams at a younger age than 45 years or at an older age as 75 years is possible through your general practitioner. Please contact your general practitioner to discuss options to start and or proceed with preventive breast exams at the hospital. In particular if you have breast cancer in your family. In case you feel or see any changes in your breasts, at any age, please contact your general practitioner.

Knowing your family medical history is very important. In case you have breast cancer in your family, you might be able to start preventive breast exams at a younger age at the hospital. After you turn 45 years you are welcome to participate in the preventive screening program we offer. Having breast cancer in the family is not a guarantee that you will also get breast cancer. If you want to know your risks please talk to your general practitioner. We advice all ages to regularly take time to do Breast Self Exams (BSE). Doing BSE monthly at home helps you become familiar with your body and you become more aware of changes that might happen in the breast area. The BSE does not replace screenings but assists you in getting familiar with your breasts before- between screening and or after screening ages.

Breast implants do not inhibit your participation with the screening program, please do inform us if you have implants during registration process before your appointment. The technicians will adjust the process. It is very important to continue the regular screenings while having breast implants. The Screening Program is for all breast types, small- medium- large and extra large with or without breast implants.

We advise everyone to perform a routine breast self-examination at home that aids in the detection of irregularities in your breast tissue. This takes no more than 5 minutes and it is something you can start doing as of today. It cannot replace the accuracy of a mammogram but it is an integral part of a personal preventive care program.
